Contemporary Engineering Economics by Chan S. Park,

Contemporary Engineering Economics by Chan S. Park,
As in the first two editions, Park's "Contemporary Engineering Economics, " 3e stimulates student enthusiasm and imagination with the use of real-world applications and contexts throughout the book in chapter opening scenarios, homework problems, and self-test questions. New features in the third edition: All sections are updated to reflect the latest tax laws, interest rates, and other financial developments. The chapters are now organized into five parts. Three new chapters (Chapters 2, 3, and 6) have been added. Chapter 2 "(Understanding Financial Statements)" introduces the basics of business language, known as financial accounting, so that engineers can understand and speak in a common language when it comes to making a variety of business decisions. Chapter 3 "(Cost Concepts and Behaviors)" covers the various cost definitions as well as their behaviors in decision making. In particular, it discusses the marginal concept, which is the basis for many economic decisions. Chapter 6 "(Principles of Investing)" unravels the mysteries of the financial markets--the language, the players, the strategies, and above all, the risks and rewards of investments, as well as their ups and downs. Chapter 7 "(Present Worth Analysis)" streamlines the principles of comparing mutually exclusive projects in detail. Chapter 14 "(Project Risk and Uncertainty)" has been expanded to include decision tree analysis. Chapter 15 "(Replacement Decisions)" has been divided into two parts: The first part introduces the basic replacement decision problems without considering the effects of income taxes, whereas the second part revisits the same decision problems with income tax consideration. Acomprehensive book website has been developed for study guides and additional information, as well as student and instructor resources. The section, "Computer Notes, " previously appearing as an end-of-chapter feature, is now consolidated onto the website.

Endogenous Growth Theory by Philippe Aghion,
Endogenous Growth Theory by Philippe Aghion,
Advanced economies have experienced a tremendous increase in material well-being since the industrial revolution. Modern innovations such as personal computers, laser surgery, jet airplanes, and satellite communication have made us rich and transformed the way we live and work. But technological change has also brought with it a variety of social problems. It has been blamed at various times for increasing wage and income inequality, unemployment, obsolescence of physical and human capital, environmental deterioration, and prolonged recessions. To understand the contradictory effects of technological change on the economy, one must delve into structural details of the innovation process to analyze how laws, institutions, customs, and regulations affect peoples' incentive and ability to create new knowledge and profit from it. To show how this can be done, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt make use of Schumpeter's concept of creative destruction, the competitive process whereby entrepreneurs constantly seek new ideas that will render their rivals' ideas obsolete. Whereas other books on endogenous growth stress a particular aspect, such as trade or convergence, this book provides a comprehensive survey of the theoretical and empirical debates raised by modern growth theory. It develops a powerful engine of analysis that sheds light not only on economic growth per se, but on the many other phenomena that interact with growth, such as inequality, unemployment, capital accumulation, education, competition, natural resources, international trade, economic cycles, and public policy.

Bill English (computer engineer) - Bill English is a computer engineer who contributed to the development of the computer mouse while working for Doug Engelbart at SRI. He left SRI in 1971 and headed to Xerox Parc, where managed the Office Systems Research Group.

Z4 (computer) - The Z4 computer, designed by German engineer Konrad Zuse and built by his company Zuse KG, was delivered to ETH Zürich, Switzerland, in September 1950. It was the first computer in the world to be sold, beating the UK's Ferranti Mark I by five months and the UNIVAC I by ten months.

Social engineering (computer security) - Social engineering (computer security), is the practice of obtaining confidential information by manipulation of legitimate users. A social engineer will commonly use the telephone or Internet to trick people into revealing sensitive information or getting them to do something that is against typical policies.

David Bradley (engineer) - David J. Bradley (born 1949) was one of the twelve engineers who worked on the original IBM PC, developing the computer's ROM BIOS code.
